15. Income Taxes:
The effective income tax rate for the three months ended March 31, 2022 was 42.1% compared to 65.4% for the three months ended March 31, 2021. The Company’s effective income tax rate has fluctuated primarily due to changes in income mix, the impacts of the Global Intangible Low Taxed Income (“GILTI”) tax rules, discrete impacts related to intraperiod allocation revaluation of deferred tax assets and liabilities as a result of the divestiture of the Performance Chemicals business, tax rate changes and changes in foreign exchange gains and losses, which create permanent differences in certain jurisdictions.
The difference between the U.S. federal statutory income tax rate and the Company’s effective income tax rate for the three months ended March 31, 2022 was mainly due to state and local taxes, a discrete shortfall tax expense related to stock compensation, and a discrete tax expense associated with the Employee Retention Credit.
The difference between the U.S. federal statutory income tax rate and the Company’s effective income tax rate for the three months ended March 31, 2021 was mainly due to state and local taxes, discrete tax impacts related to intra-period allocation revaluation of deferred tax assets and liabilities as a result of the Performance Chemicals divestiture, and the tax effect of permanent differences related to foreign currency exchange gain or loss.
